the Italian Dare G4 is finally on a track

Postby lmasarati » Mon Mar 01, 2010 4:24 pm

Hello Spadge and all,
yesterday I've been at Varano de Melegari (http://www.varano.it) for a track day, it was also my very first time on a track and was fantastic.
I had a lot of fun with my G4, so I'm posting some photos of the event.
I've been the slowest  on the track but not so distant from the others...

Please note the passenger seat in the second photo... I forgot removing my son's booster seat!
The front brakes and the tires have suffered a lot. I still have the same Yokohama A032, the temperature outside was 8°Celsius but after 1 hour the tire was melting.
When braking at the end of the pit straight, at about 100 mph, there was a strong smell of burning brakes... I'm considering an upgrade of the front discs with vented ones :D

You could just try some decent pads first, but vented discs would be better.

In both cases, suggestions are welcome...

About decent pads, do you know which type should I look for?
I suppose that front brakes have been taken from a donor car, but I don't know which one.
And about tires, in your racing experience, what is the correct inflating pressure for the Yokohama A032R?
Cheers.

Post a pic up of the calipers. I suspect that they are Sierra.

It's a good task to complete for the next weekend, I'll take some measures of the wheel rims too

Hi Spadge,

Was about to post a reply to Imasarati about Dare G4 brakes. Here is a quick note whilst waiting for admin to allow me to post on the board, as I'll be away from computer from the next week.

Fronts I have Ferodo DS3000 part No. FCP810R listed as Capri 1.3 and Allegro (yes really Austin Allegro!)

They give good pedal feel and bite really well, especially as they warm up a bit. But still fine from cold for the sprints & hillclimbs for me.

Downside is a lot of dust so have to clean the alloys often and some brake squeal. Discs do wear but are easy and cheap to replace Triumph parts.

Perhaps the DS2500 version would be more suited to road use with occasional track days?

Rears are standard Ford Sierra, Granada Scorpio

I know Tim Moore had vented front discs, not sure specs.

Cheers, hope that helps,
regards,
Matt

Many thanks Matt,
it's a good starting point: I found this page, with a lot of interesting informations about brake pads http://www.ferodoracing.it/scheda/pastiglia/cod/FCP810
Anyway I'm going to remove front and rear wheels to take some photo of the brakes, maybe I can also remove the pads to see which type is currently installed.
I'm quite curious about identifying the donors of the various parts of this car, at least the ones more subject to wearing because I'm not so close to the Black Barn Cottage for basic servicing :D

Bye
Luigino

Matt was right, the pads are the same dimensions and design as Ferodo FCP810 listed for capri/cortina.
Good job.

Looking at the same Ferodo catalogue, under Ford Granada/Sierra, found the FCP408 code

http://www.ferodoracing.it/scheda/pastiglia/cod/FCP408

the size and form factor are very close to mine...

Behind the rear-right wheel I found also an oily coilover...
It is not good, isn't it?

The colour is light gold, I think it is a GAZ coilover, do you know if it is serviceable?

Your front calipers look to me like Girling Type 16.

I would say your rear coil over is a GAZ unit. Personally I would bin these and fit a set of Pro Techs - Spadge can advise. I have pro Techs on both my G15 racer and my MGTF Drag car and am fitting them to our MG Midget racer.

I agree, double adjustable shocks are already in my wishlist.
I've seen that the standard suspensions are confortable for road use, but quite soft for track (see pictures at the beginning of the thread). In the next weeks I'm going to remove them and take some measures on the coils.
In the meanwhile I replaced front tires with a pair of Toyo 888, because the front-right yokohama A032 was completely worn on the external side, both were near the end of their life.
I'm also waiting for Ferodo DS2500 pads that have been ordered and are on their way to my garage.
Cheers.
