G15 bumpers, & winding windows (again)

Postby velosolex50 » Mon Jan 25, 2010 9:38 pm

Currently restoring my car, wondering if I can source new bumpers as likely to be cheaper than replating old pitted ones. I am guessing early beetle on the front, and riley elf on the back, does anyone know for sure? Not that a riley elf bumper will be easy to find. Any info on winding window conversion also gratefully received.

Yes, that's what I've been told,too.

Note that Riley Elf came in two versions, with and without bumper bars. The same bumper was used on Wolsley Hornet. The one for bumper bars will have extra holes in it. Guess the Rootes club will be the best source.

The front bumper is rear Beetle. I guess that one Beetle rear bumper cut in half will make both Ginetta halves, but you should check on that before cutting.

This info is from Derek Robson's "G15 User's Guide", May 1988.

The front bumper is indeed a split early Beetle rear item and readily available cheaply. The rear however is from the Riley Elf / Wolseley Hornet and is totally unobtainable as nobody has ever remanufactured these (no demand)
However all is not lost, the Lotus Elan +2 used a widened version of this bumper and according to the Paul Matty website it is still listed as available. It is probably extremely expensive and would need to be narrowed ( I think )
Has anybody else ever investigated this?

I got my front bumper from German and Swedish spares. Its a pre '68 rear beetle bumper.
Mine is mild steel, chrome plated and cost approx £18. They also do a stainless version, which I think, from memory, is a bit over £80.

Hornet/Elf rear bumpers do pop up on ebay from time to time, and prices vary incredibly, I've seen tidy ones go for £40 delivered, and rusty ones go for £80 delivered. Patience is the key, just wait, and one will turn up eventually.

Hi,

I quicky discarded the Lotus option as it was an eyewatering £700

I do have a spare rear Riley bumper which needs a little bit of work. Its not bad and a little bit of gentle sheet metal bumping is required to sort it out. It will take a rechrome. If interested, please call me on 01264 735636 or 0771 2676534. Best regards, Robert.

Thanks guys.
I have sent the original bumpers to the platers, hope they come up ok & not too expensive.
I've given up on winding windows, and asked Neil at Amber racing to make some stainless frames as the originals were too rusty. He wanted the originals as a pattern to avoid small variations, so heres hoping for a good fit.

I've just discovered this if anybody feels like following it up, maybe they would do an Elf/G15 one if asked nicely.

BRAND NEW STAINLESS STEEL
For GORDON KEEBLE Models
With 1 FRONT BUMPER + 1 REAR BUMPER
Available at long last

The good news is: our bumper sets are replicas of the originals- so the shape, fit, and dimensions are absolutely accurate and look spot on!!! Plus they are far more affordable- they are even BETTER THEN ORIGINAL! They are made from high grade stainless steel- polished to a mirror finish. JUST like CHROME
Our bumpers have big advantages over chrome plated mild steel bumpers:
1. Our bumpers never rust and are backed with a lifetime anti corrosion warranty. We are happy to put our money where our mouth is on this! Just think- should your bumpers ever rust- we will send you new ones!
2. If the bumpers get dented or scratched they can be beaten back to shape and re-polished.
3. Our bumpers are made in very high grade (304/ 1.4301) stainless steel. (Around 1/5 of the steel is pure CHROME!!!)
4. Painted back - The back of the bumpers are acid etch primed and painted with ICI two pack paint.
5. Our bumpers are finished to a high mirror polish, just like chrome.
